Learning whilst having fun..point proven.

The boys and I wobbled off to a new indoor play centre today to check it out. We knew it would be quiet, so thought it an ideal time to virtually have the run of the place to give it a good try out.

Great fun was had by all, and we even managed to find time to integrate some maths into the fun.

Laurence, counted how many cups we had, and then how many he would need for everyone. It's basic, but that's where it starts.

Of course, I was shocked to find that even here the most simple of spelling mistakes are made. How unprofessional.

I'm sorry for the poor quality by the way, but seriously...potatoe? Ribeania?... For goodness sake.

Anyway, disregarding the appalling use of the English language in their literature...Jo had a smashing time and thoroughly loved chasing coloured balls about the place, which was great, because he's been having a rotten couple of days with teething problems. I'm pleased this took his mind off it for a while.

  1. spelling is not so important now those days have gone im afraid we got machines that can spell for us now the computer or moblie phone when you txt has spell check on it!

in the old days when all you had was paper and pen you had to learn to spell but now you dont quite so much? if you tested people in work for spelling many would fail! so now it is accepted that people use pc with spell and grammer check!

im many ways your worry over spelling is very out of date of a time gone maybe a better time but its gone! in some areas now english is not first choice for many who live here let alone spelling!

many companys know that people are not going to be to good at spelling but what can their do not employ this person? when employer knows the computer will do the spelling!

  2. The problem being that a computer will not always insert capital letters or know whether you mean rose or rows, there or their; to say nothing of apostrophes and commas. Poor spelling and grammar make people less likely to be taken serious; it are not a good advertisement in an application for a job or even in a brief comment on a blog.

In the mean time Webbb the employer needs some one to do the job! you get back to the classroom Webb and worry about your their there commas! In the real world employers just do not have the time to keep on worrying about some one spelling the odd word wrong! computers can now also check for grammer now!
as for an application for a job this is now very offten done with a computer and advice is giving now by many job advisers who help with the cv you can also pay to have a cv done by an expert and it does not cost that much! being able to fill out a job application form just shows that you know how to fill it out it does not show if you can do the job! The truth is an employer wants some one who can do the job and does not care about geting the odd word wrong your living in the 1950 where teacher knew best!

  7. @ peter and carol said...is it true you where chucked off a list? LOL you been a naughty girl?

Yep. I certainly was. For speaking my mind and making presumptions (apparently) about the list owner, who was rude and judgemental about a new member who asked one too many questions in a suspicious manner. (she apparently asked them in the wrong way (??))

I am apparently only one of a few who he has banned, and he only did so with much regret...apparently.

sadly, he didnt have the balls to approach me initially with his concerns and try to resolve the matter in an adult fashion, instead he felt it was prudent to throw his toys out of the pram and stick his tongue out..then run as fast as he could to the safety of his ivory tower, where he remains presiding egotistically over the whole of Home Education-dom.

Do I regret anything? Absolutely not, because his actions have only affirmed what I thought of, and spoke of his group anyway.

  9. some one said on old Webb blog this Peter, most women appreciate being able to belong to a group which is supportive of their choices, especially when they feel they are swimming against the tide by home educating in the first place.

your a women you think this is true? would you not prefer to meet other home educating women? we never needed any of that touchly stuff so never did! just got on with the job of attempting to home educate!

  10. It was Mike from HE-UK who banned me. And I don't give a monkeys. Lol.

He banned me because I had the gall to speak out against something he did to a new member of his list. He thought she was a researcher, which is ok, but it wouldn't hurt to ask first, then act later. Mike seems to prefer doing this the other way round.
As it turns out - and as no surprise to me, the new member was not a researcher, and spoke quite strongly about feeling a bit miffed at being labelled as such. I can't blame her.
It didnt take long for others to realise their mistake and start fawning over the new member trying to make ammends.
Mike, however, didnt even have the grace to apologise to her publicly. Instead she was bombarded with explanations of why it is so important to weed out the researchers and those from the LA who pose as Home Educators.

I know you are likely to uphold this view of his...as you always seem to anyway.
But my point is this, people are well within their rights to be suspicious of whom ever they want to be, but surely it is a wise move to prove those suspicions either correct or otherwise first, then act accordingly, instead of acting rashly and making yourself look like a bit of a plonker!

Actually, I think it's important as a Home Educator to meet other like minded people out there, mostly for the exchange of information and support.
I don't meet up with HE people to make my next best friend, but for my son to learn how to appreciate the finer points of socialisation and to have the opportunity of meeting with other peers.

It is good to have some sort of support network around you when you first go into HE, because like the other poster said, you can feel as though you are swimming against the tide. There is alot to take on board, and there are bond to be times, when you feel as though you have bitten off more than you can swallow. It's at those times that it is helpful to have someone, or a group of someones to turn to, who may have encountered what you are going through, and have come out the other side with advice to pass on.

Whether or not you choose to use that opportunity - to make friends, or become involved with other HE groups or families, is entirely up to you. Neither way is more right than the other. It's what suits the individual.

Your way suited you..others may feel differently and need more support. Personally, I would like to achieve a happy medium between the two; to know that there is support should I need it, but not from a source which requires me to strictly adhere to a variety of conditions in order to qualify for it.

you then say-but surely it is a wise move to prove those suspicions either correct or otherwise first,

yes we agree you must first prove your suspicions are correct! if this mike thought new member was not a real home educator he showed have questioned this person further until he got to the truth! that way when you asked about this matter he could have shown you the proof or lack of proof.

only ever been baned from our LA! the girl at the desk got cross when we asked for some funds towards the home education for Peter amazing she started shouting at us! are you not glad you know us? we had some adventures with our LA many letters some very long! had to have all letters from LA re sent back via post office! had to pay for that service to!

i let you know what i find out about this mike!

I don't do Home Education anyones way, other than my own.
I understand what you are trying to say, but really, there is no need.
I do agree with some things Simon talks about, but I am sure you will not judge me negatively for that.
People all over the world have differing views on many things, but as mature and sensible people we should learn to accept that and try to get along respecting others' views and opinions.

I too enjoy the friendly banter between the many people which read and comment on my blog. It's good to see so many people happy to share their thoughts. :)

I'm a private history/English tutor in my spare time. I have never taught in a school, and would never want to. I'm not the sort of person who enjoys being wrapped up in bureaucracy. :)

I just like to learn things, then impart that to others.

Penny Jones does not hate home educators at all. She is actually very enthusiastic about home education. Nobody who had met her would say such a thing.
